1971 Chevelle

1971ChevelleThe Chevrolet Chevelle SS represented Chevrolet's entry into the hot midsize muscle car battle. The Chevelle SS was the high performance version of Chevrolet's Chevelle, and had its own line of engines and performance equipment. At first caught napping with just a 327 V8, the Chevelle SS would soon sport powerful 396 V8s and eventually the most powerful rated engine in muscle car history, the LS6 454 in 1970. The Chevelle, along with the Pontiac GTO, remains one of the most popular cars from this era and with good reason. Its strong performance at a reasonable price made it popular on the street and at the track.

1971Chevelle 1971 saw the collapse of muscle car performance. In response to GM's edict that all engines ran on unleaded fuel and to meet ever restrictive emission standards, Chevrolet detuned all its engines and introduced two new entry level engines. The standard engine was now a 350 V8 two barrel that put out a meager 245 bhp through a single exhaust! Also available was a 350 V8 four barrel that put out 270 bhp. The 402 engine that was previously still known as a 396 was renamed the "Turbo Jet 400" and offered only 300 bhp, down from 350 bhp. The 375 bhp version was no longer available. The LS6 454 was also killed, but the LS5 454 returned with 365 bhp, an increase of 5 bhp from 1970. All Chevelles got the new single headlight design from the Monte Carlo and could be optioned with hood stripes and the cowl induction hood. Interestingly, only the LS5 carried external engine ID; they carried "SS 454" badges. All others only said "SS." That was a pretty revealing sign of the times.

This 1971 Chevelle was originally equipped with a 307ci v-8 and an automatic transmission. It was purchased with the idea of creating a personalized SS. In this day in age it's almost impossible to truly verify what a true SS is versus a clone. Our customer wanted to have the look and performance of an SS Chevelle with a personalized touch.

1971Chevelle A 71 LT-1 350ci Chevy was found and rebuilt using a forged steel crank, Chevy pink rods with ARP bolts, forged pistons, and a nice streetable hydraulic cam. It's equipped with a set of Dart 2.02/1.60 heads and a Weiand aluminum intake topped by a 650 Holley double pumper. A Muncie M-22 Rock Crusher transmission was installed in place of the original automatic and a posi-traction unit with 4.11 gears was installed in the 10 bolt rear.

1971Chevelle It was then time to address the body of this 37 year old car. As is common with most Chevelles the rear quarter panels were rotted along with a portion of the outer wheelhouses. The trunk lid was destroyed and the tail panel needed to be replaced. The passenger side door and both front fenders also needed to be replaced. After seeing what we were up against both rear quarter panels were cut out along with the tail panel. Thanks to our good friend Dave at East Coast Chevelle we were able to purchase all the parts we needed to repair this vehicle. New rear quarters were installed along with a new tail panel. The passenger side door was replaced along with both front fenders. Fortunately enough the hood was in good enough condition to be repaired. After all the metal work had been completed the entire vehicle was metal conditioned and prepared for body work. Once all body work was completed the car was prepped for paint. Instead of going for an original color, the customer chose a custom “House of Kolor” 3 stage base coat, candy coat, clear coat paint scheme. The vehicle was entirely painted in the base coat and then the SS stripes were taped off. At that time the candy coat was applied covering the rest of the car with the candy color and leaving the stripes in the base coat. After drying the tape was removed and the entire vehicle was cleared. Custom SS airbrushing is likely to be added to both front fenders for added personalization.
